80-year-old takes on 80 press-ups challenge for Help for Heroes

John MulcahyHow many press-ups can you do in one minute?

John Mulcahy from Melton Mowbray plans on doing 80 press-ups in just 60 seconds, on his 80th birthday, all in aid of Help for Heroes!

Tomorrow, Saturday 11 January, John plans to celebrate his 80th birthday by filming this amazing challenge and sharing on Youtube, and his family and friends will be in attendance to cheer him on!

The idea for this demonstration of physical prowess was inspired by a 2007 You Tube video of John making a point to a class of Year 11s about old versus young. Unaware of being filmed at the time, John continued, until his retirement in 2011, to use the strategy where necessary to establish greater respect for the elderly.

While thus proving that you can't judge a book by its cover, along the way he somehow simply picked up the nickname "Gimme 50" Mulcahy. Now, at eighty, and especially for Help for Heroes, he remains just as determined to reinforce the message.

"I was diagnosed with chronic arthritis when I was younger and spent five weeks at an Army rehabilitation unit in Chessington", says John. "During that time I was taught a number of daily exercises by Army instructors which I've modified and used ever since."

Waterfield Leisure Centre, in Melton, will also be fundraising for Help for Heroes tomorrow.

If you would like to support John in this amazing endeavour, please donate generously to his bmycharity giving page.

We wish John the very best of luck with his challenge!
