Climb for Heroes

Ex Spider Pig Help For Heroes Nov 13

This week, Help for Heroes have funded 10 people from Headley Court to take part in Expedition ‘Spider Pig’ aptly named after the Simpson’s Spider Pig character, the pig that climbs.

The trip forms part of one of over 300 activities Help for Heroes fund every year through Battle Back, an MOD initiative of which Help for Heroes are founder partners.

Those taking part are mostly patients from Headley Court with a whole mixture of visible and non-visible injuries including neurological, complex trauma and mental health.

Some members of the group are very novice and some have climbed before, many with Battle Back at Headley Court where they have got the bug, or the confidence and desire to apply for this specific expedition.

One was even an instructor before injury and is learning to adapt previously acquired skills to instruct again.

Three members of the group have already expressed a committed desire to follow on to instructor awards in the near future showing how sport can often open up opportunities for an individual, other than participation.

Trips like this are all about making sure the recovery of the individual is at the forefront.  So far, all are climbing extremely well and adapting techniques, kit, route selection and attitudes to make it work. The group has bonded really well and are helping & looking after each other with some effective co-counseling starting to emerge. Confidence all round is improving with everyone gaining from the experience which is fantastic.

This month also sees Help for Heroes enabling individuals to take part in recreational Ice Sledge Hockey, race as part of KartForce, gain qualifications on an archery leader’s course, cycle for their country with a new prosthetic arm Help for Heroes have funded and take part in trials for GB Rowing, all thanks to you, our amazing supporters, who constantly go above and beyond for our wounded, injured and sick.

Why not do your bit for our heroes by taking part in Help for Heroes’ signature challenge, the Hero Ride 2014.  Visit www.heroride.org.uk for more information.
