We are excited to announce that one of our amazing Band of Brothers members Jon Giemza-Pipe, along with his brilliant canine patner Toby have been nominated for a 2016 Soldiering On Award!
Jon and Toby have been nominated for Canine Partner Award which recognises the incredible association between a member of the Armed Forces Community and their canine partner, highlighting how this partnership can help recovery after serious injury.
Grant funding from Help for Heroes to Canine Partners enabled Jon and Toby's pairing which has seen Jon go from strength to strength.
Jon says; "A hip injury in 2009 brought my life to a standstill. Unfortunately I do suffer from chronic pain on a daily basis but that's where Toby comes in any helps me. He somehow knows when I'm in pain, don't ask me how but he does! He gets up on my knee and provides a welcome distraction. He's given me the opportunity to get out and do things which I didn't think I'd be able to do anymore, and has actually made me want to get out and do things which I didn't think I wanted to do anymore.
The walls do tend to close in on you a bit when you're injured, but actually having a handsome dog like this, you want to get out and see outside. He's been as much of my rehabilitation as anything else and he's going to be my continuity going in to civilian life."
Jon is one of 8 Veterans who has been supported by Help for Heroes and Canine Partners to date. Each sucessdul partnership costs £20,000. Watch Jon and Toby's full nomination at:
