Finding Freedom in the Mountains

Tuesday 28 January 2014

A group of wounded, injured and sick wounded personnel and veterans from the Plymouth Naval Service Recovery Centre, which is supported by Help for Heroes, overcame adversity recently in the snow-packed pistes of Tignes.

Skiing is one of the most exhilarating sports for both the able-bodied and for the disabled, and is one that is physically demanding, fast-moving, and thrilling to experience no wonder it was such a hit with the residents of the Plymouth Recovery Centre!

Under the experienced guidance of Help for Heroes’ Expedition Leader Marty Aldrich, who was there to look after the Veterans attending the camp, and CSgt Marty Wilkin, who was there in charge of those still in service, the guys took to the slopes in the French Alps.

For some it was a ‘first time’ opportunity to learn how to ski, whilst for other members of the team the week gave time to hone their skills on some of the more challenging ski runs. Marty said: “This trip has provided a great opportunity for veterans and serving wounded to mix and provide each other with support. Many new friendships have been made and some old ones, rekindled.”
