Bryn and Emma Parry, co founders of forces charity Help for Heroes, were astonished to receive the Military Award for Best Support to the Armed Forces at The Sun’s extraordinary ‘Millies’ event.
The awards were the idea of HRH Prince Charles who suggested to The Sun that there should be public recognition for the extraordinary work and courage displayed by members of the Armed Forces. The star-studded evening was held at Hampton Court and attended by hundreds of celebrities, senior servicemen and supporters of the Forces.

Defence Secretary John Hutton and Help for Heroes Chief Executive Bryn Parry cut the turf for a new swimming pool and gym complex for injured troops at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court.

There was pre-Christmas fun and games in-store when Topps Tiles at London Road Thetford staged a special family fun day and sponsored leg wax.
With heartwarming support from other local businesses, store manager Amanda Hullett put together a programme of activities which raised over £160. On hand to receive donations was Richard Wyndham, Help for Heroes’ volunteer based in Norwich.
Amanda confirmed: “the day was a great success and we hope to have another fundraiser in the summer to support our injured servicemen and women wounded in the service of our country”.

A Charity Christmas Ball 2008 in support of Major Phil Packer’s aim to raise £1million for Help for Heroes was held at the The Room by the River, South Bank, London.
‘Phil’s Million'‘ has now reached over £150,000, he will complete over 20 sporting challenges to raise awareness of disability sport and provide information and opportunities for fellow injured servicemen.

Richard "Dickie" Greenwood has very sadly passed away.
The family have chosen 'Help For Heroes' as the Charity they would like everyone to donate to in Dickie's Memory.
Dickie was a former British Soldier serving in the Corps of Royal Engineers, he was an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Engineer and carried his skills forward into Civilian life where he has worked extensively for ArmorGroup in several Countries in Mine Action, his valued work has undoubtedly saved countless peoples lives and allowed thousands of people to safely return to their homes and work on land that was once mined.
All of us at Help for Heroes would like to offer our sincere condolences to all of Dickies family and friends.

In October 2008 the same month H4H was launched, a ladies section of Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Royal Marines Association, former WAGS now MAGS (mums and grannies) agreed too raise £1000.
Last week their final cheque arrived for £5113!

On 15th November 2008 Lynceus in association with EDI and The Tivoli, hosted a fund raising “It’s a Knockout” style challenge. This included a raffle, Officers Mess, various games and a Pig Roast.
“Drinkers at the packed pub were able to buy officers’ mess ranks – the bigger the donation, the higher the rank” . Total raised to date is £2204.38, which is still set to rise!

Kay Burry along with three Royal Marines Reserves and some staff of the local Virgin Active Health Club undertook a sponsored row at the gym.
The idea behind the row was to honour the men of 45 Commando, they set out to row 126km (the distance between the gym and RM Condor), but actually ended up rowing 160km.
Sponsor money is still coming in, but to date they have raised £1,350.

On 9th Dec Rod Parker and his veterans angling club in Derbyshire held a charity fishing match and raised £1170 for H4H through sponsorship. The full proceeds of the match were split between H4H and the Sherwood Foresters Passchendale memorial fund.

 The Three Peaks of Yorkshire challenge raised £787.02. Event organiser Paul Cubbin commented 'We had a great time, but it was very tiring. We completed the challenge in 10 hrs 30 mins'.

Mabel Hutton, Ellie Sherlock and Natasha Hison are responsible for the giant Christmas card, and they did a sterling job persuading all of the cast and crew of the Admirals' Players pantomime to donate to Help for Heroes, in lieu of sending each other individual cards; they raised £131.00 for H4H.

A team from the Eddy Grimstead Citreon Garage in Romford pulled their van of parcels for the troops through Romford, Brentwood and Chelmsford, finally delivering them at Colchester barracks where they were met by the Garrison Commander. Donations were collected along the way and they have raised over £8,000 for H4H.

The Royal Navy always goes that extra mile for charity, but in this case the phrase has been taken quite literally by Sailors and Marines from HMS BULWARK Ship’s Company. They have completed 2 separate challenges to raise money for local charities in County Durham, the Ship’s affiliated county, and Help for Heroes.
13 Royal Marines, cycled an impressive 495 miles from the Ship’s base port of Devonport in Plymouth all the way to the City of Durham.
Sailors and remaining Marines onboard undertook a different challenge entirely. Collectively the Sailors ran the equivalent distance of the circumference of the county, 192 miles, on 2 running machines in the Ship’s gymnasium.

The first ever British Embassy games took place in true sporting style in Kabul, Afghanistan. A total of nearly $5000 was raised as a result of the Games, which included a barbecue, raffle prizes and disco in aid of Help for Heroes.
