‘Swim the London Marathon’ was a team event where participants aimed to swim the equivalent distance of the London Marathon on the same day that the famous event was held!
Some keen swimmers were in the pool not long after it opened, at about 0615hrs, and the last swimmer left the water at about 2020hrs that evening, with someone in the water at almost all times. Everyone hugely exceeded their expectations, those who had signed up to do 10 lengths ending up swimming half a mile, those signing up for half a mile swimming a full mile and so on. One of the most amusing parts of the day was the lengthy battle between representatives from the RAF and the Army along the lines of ‘I can swim more lengths than you can’ - these 2 individuals alone covered just over 8 miles! The RAF claimed most lengths in total – 300 – and the Army claim most lengths in one stint – 230. The latter however is contested as the RAF participant claims that the Army not only rested at the ends, but on one occasion got out of the water to use the facilities – I left them to argue it out over a friendly beer!
It was a fantastic achievement that could not have been accomplished without the help and support of all the people who volunteered to fundraise, count lengths, find PR boards and swimmers, put up posters and maps and sort things out for me when I was unable to do so due to my nightshift lifestyle out here – huge thanks to everyone. The attached picture includes several members of the team at a thank you beer and pizza night at the Oasis bar, commemorative certificates were also presented. Sadly, but to be expected, not all the 34 people who took part could be there.
A huge thank you from all the team at H4H! |

On Thursday 2nd April, 20 soldiers took on the challenge of a 24-hour endurance event to raise cash for Help For Heroes.
The 18 members from TFSU inMönchengladbach and 2 guests who volunteered to make up the numbers attempted the triathlon with a difference.
Organised by SSgt Gaz Hughes the various cap badges and arms came together to cycle, run and tab around the perimeter fence of Ayrshire Barracks with super human effort to support the well-recognised and popular charity.
Split down into 4 man squads they each battled through hourly shifts to cover 1 274 miles the distance between Basra and Kabul.
Cpl Tom McGinty who started and more importantly finished the triathlon said, “ It was quite hard; the worst time was cycling between 1 and 3 in the morning. I had to dig deep to get it going. I would do it again for Help For Heroes but definitely need to do more cycle training – 40 plus miles is hard.”
A fantastic 3 000 euros was raised and the team would like to thank everyone who sponsored them and NAAFI for donating the meals and refreshments that kept them fuelled.

It was a case of cops and ruggers when a team of policemen battled soldiers in a charity rugby match in aid of Help for Heroes.
A rag-tag team of soldiers, past and present, battled a team of burly cops from the Metropolitan Police in a
ButEd, a police sergeant on Scotland Yard’s territorial support group, said the results were not important. He said: “This game shows how the Metropolitan Police can work in partnership with the Army to raise money and the profile of Help for Heroes.” Six Chelsea pensioners were invited to the charity event, which also raised funds through a raffle that included a signed rugby shirts by Wasps boss Ian McGeechan and the Harlequins rugby team.
Veterans from the Falklands War and the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts joined serving soldiers - mostly from the 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery - to make up the “Fury Invitation 15” team. They battled it out in a gruelling encounter against the Metropolitan Police Rugby Football Club (MPRFC).
Organiser Ed Cudmore, honorary secretary of the MPRFC, played on the police team and is nursing a broken rib from the game. Ed, 33, said he estimated that the event raised an amazing £3,500 for Help for Heroes, the Sun-backed charity which provides essential support for our injured war heroes. He said: “The MPRFC scored a late try to snatch a win from the Fury XV. “The game was played in awesome spirit in front of a spectacular crowd and bright sunshine. “A perfect day to help raise funds for an extremely worthwhile cause. “I would like to thank all for your extremely generous contributions and efforts to make this day an absolute success, and to raise over £3,500 for Help for Heroes Serving soldier Andy Dawling, 35, provided the kits - emblazoned with Help for Heroes branding - which he co-designed with Ed. Players were charged £40 to play in the match. A percentage of the fee paid for the shirts and the rest went to charity. The players got to keep their shirts as mementos. The shirts were provided by Fury Rugby k - which is co-owned by Andy, a Lance Bombadier in the 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery.
Not to be outdone, the charity match also saw the women’s police team, the Metropolitan Police Women’s Rugby Football Club (MPWRFC) take on Chelmsford Ladies RFC. The game was won 12-5 by the policewomen - making it a double victory on the day for the police.
Well done from all the team at Help for Heroes! |

Deciding to do something positive I coaxed some members from the exchange gym in Bridgwater to join me in running the Taunton half marathon.
Before I knew it my friend Mark ex Royal Green Jackets & I were training with rucksacks doing 10 mile runs. Then we got some of the lady members to join us & it just went from strength to strength.
My comrades from the Regt. Association sponsored me for £200 with the other runners sponsors as well we are well over £1,000.
Whilst we were training some members of The 1st Btn Rifles were sadly lost in the conflict in Afghanistan.
With comrades from the Light Infantry (Rifles) Association we attended the funeral of Cpl. Tom Gaden in Taunton.
We decided to dedicate the Taunton Half Marathon to the memory of Tom Gaden. We were grateful that his parents Judy & Nick agreed to see us of at the start & the team made a donation to the Tom Gaden Memorial Fund.
"As we set off along the route in boots,denims,H4H t shirt & rucksacks we had great support around the course, it was inspiring that The Help For Heroes Charity really is a mirror of the British Public support for our servicemen & women. It was a very hot day & I was overtaken by all of the team but like everyone else I finished & we were met by Judy & Nick Gaden with there family, it really was a fitting end to a great day.
Well done Bryn & Emma Parry long may Help for Heroes gather strength. "Clive Best Light Infantry (Rifles) Association Taunton Branch

I held the catwalk event at Aldershot Military Garrison on Saturday 4th April 09.
The night itself went really well and I had some fantastic feedback. I managed to raise £700.00! So for a first attempt I was really pleased. The models on the catwalk looked stunning and although it was only held in my local community centre, by the time myself, husband, family and friends had finished dressing the hall it looked very glamorous!
Fantastic raffle prizes which helped raise funds from a weekend at the Victory Services Club, London to two tickets to see Greece at the Picadilly Theatre, very popula!.
..
The wedding dresses we beautiful and I still have over 100 plus left so we I am going to do another event again, hopefully in soon.
The models were thanking me saying they really enjoyed themselves and would love to do it again, it was a really relaxed pleasant evening and to top it all we had a live proposal at the end which left most of the hall in tears! So a big thankyou to all those who helped. And for any of you who would like to help raise some money, pleasant night out or know of anyone planning to get married and in need of that special dress....watch this space as i will be setting my date soon.

A PITLOCHRY butcher has returned from a North Pole marathon that took place in temperatures as low as -37C.
Rory MacDonald (35), of MacDonald Butchers, raised nearly £4,000 in aid of Help for Heroes after taking part in the race with his brother Neil (40).
They ran in memory of their late brother-in-law, John McDermid, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007.
Rory has taken part in marathons in New York, Malta and, more recently, the 2008 Marathon des Sables over the Sahara Desert, but he said that he had never experienced conditions like those of the North Pole.
“I have done a lot of distance running and taken part in quite a few marathons, but these were very extreme conditions—the actual day of the race it was –37C, so it was brutal … but the whole experience was majestic.”
“We stopped at Spitsbergen (Norway) and saw polar bears, which was fantastic.
“We took my father, Tom—who is 71-years-old—along for the trip and he thought it was fantastic, despite the harsh weather conditions.”
Both Rory and Neil finished in a time of 7 hours, 36 minutes and 58 seconds.

Denise Barker, Adam Jones, Garry Barker, Jen Barker, Andy Whitehill, and Hazel Barker
completed the mountains BenNevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon, in 33hours, and had an incredible time doing so!
"
We were raring to go at 4:30am Saturday 11th April 2009, and started Ben Nevis in the dark, but were soon amazed by the stunning views and extreme amount of snow at the peak. It was such an experience ascending and descending the three mountains, something none of us had attempted before, and we all came away elated by it and very proud of ourselves for doing the challenge. It was especially worthwhile doing it in the knowledge at how much we’d raised for Help for Heroes, and this was very motivating.
We have raised £1000!"

'The Photo has a 17(R) Sqn Typhoon in the background and Phil (Competitor) and Tarnia from H4H's (Linc's regional co-ordinator). The Typhoon is one of the 17(R) Sqn Aircraft and previously both Phil & Myself worked on 17(F) Sqn for three years (late 80's & early 90's) when it was a Tornado Squadron in Germany, Phil was posted back to the UK shortly before Gulf War One and I served twice at Dhahran Airbase in Saudi Arabia during my 3yrs on the Squadron. So the emblem on this aircraft brings back fond memories to both of us. 17(R) Squadron officially reformed in 2005 with the Eurofighter Typhoon, accepting its standard back from RAF Cranwell, where it has lain for the past six years, Initially the squadrons role was to bring the Typhoon up to "air-to-air" operational status, this is now being followed up by proving the Typhoon's "air-to-ground" capability as the Typhoon Operational Evaluation Unit, the squadron has the responsibility for the technical and tactical exploitation of the aircraft' Phil McNeill

| James Cartwright took part in the South Down's Way Mountain Bike Challenge raising over £500 for H4H!
It didn't go wholly according to plan, as by bike broke half way through Day 1, but thankfully I was able to buy parts for my bike and the mechanics fixed it so I could complete Day 2. The event was far more difficult than I had imagined and I had totally under-estimated it! It took me roughly 3 1/2 hours to complete the 25 miles on Day 1 and 8 hours to complete the 54 miles on Day 2! It was a very good event though, with the scenery and the views off the top of the hills being fantastic.
From all the Team at H4H a huge well done and thank you! |

Charmian Bannister and Anna Martin ran the Paris Marathon and have raised £800!
The event went really well even though it was hard work! The sun was
shining - a little too hard at some points.... making it a hot day. But
there was a fantastic atmosphere with loads of British supporters in the
crowd to cheer us on. It was our first marathon and we had trained hard for it but we still found it incredibly difficult, especially the last 6 miles - and we are still walking funny 2 days later! But overall, a very
rewarding experience and possibly the first of many!?
