Service personnel visiting two Cleethorpes venues will get discount if they are wearing their uniform. Solar-powered wheelchairs: rally running on sunshine The High Sheriff of Somerset, Maw is the embodiment of rural charm, hardly the type you'd imagine rally driving. But on Wednesday she will be leading the SolaRola Adventure, a solar-powered event that aims to inspire and educate while raising funds for good causes (including Help for Heroes and the Injured Jockeys' Fund). Maw will be leading a sextet of solar-powered wheelchairs from Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster, all the way to the Royal Bath and West Show. Their aim is to arrive at the show on May 28. "We thought the cavalcade would bring solar power into the public eye," says Maw. "It also gives disabled people a chance to do something for the environment." Promoters stage show to help war wounded WSO stage a six fight show dinner at the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsbury tonight in aid of the 'Help for Heroes' war wounded charity. In the main event, Walthamstow light heavyweight JJ Ojuederie takes a step nearer toward a British title shot in this difficult but crucial test against the reigning Southern Area champion Andrew Lowe. A turning point in Ojuederie's career came with an excellent stoppage win over then much vaunted Albanian prospect Eder Kurti at the Elephant & Castle in 2005. Wins over house fighters Lardy Price, Carl Wright and the dangerous John Anthony have been mixed in with victories against opponents such as Simeon Cover, Tony Booth, Ayitey Powers and Hastings Rasani. Pitched as the opponent more often than not, JJ has put together a roll of ten consecutive unbeaten contests in his pro career. Hackney based Lowe is a technically sound boxer who challenged for the British title several years ago. The Galleon Suite at the Royal National has hosted some great fights in the past involving the likes of Lester Jacobs, Cornelius Carr, Ensley Bingham, Adrian Dodson and Nicky Cook. Perhaps the finest fight this venue has staged was Ensley Bingham's spectacular ninth round knockout of Delroy Leslie ten years ago for the British light middleweight title live on BBC1. Help for Heroes fundraiser sets off on epic 1,255 mile walk Countryside Alliance (CA) fundraiser Andrew Bruce will be embarking on a 1,255 mile walk today (Friday 16 May) to help raise money for Help for Heroes — a charity which helps badly injured servicemen returning from Iraq and Afganistan. He will be leaving his fundraising role to walk along the Way of St James medieval pilgrimage route — starting from the Cathedrale de St Pierre in Geneva and finishing at Santiago de Compostela in north west Spain about three months later. Andrew told H&H: "I will be walking about 18 to 22 miles a day — it's going to be tough, it's hot and mountainous on the route. I will be sleeping in a one-man tent, which only weighs 860g as I have to carry everything with me. "It's very daunting. And my training has been non-existent — I've just been so busy fundraising I haven't had any time. A couple of weekends ago I walked about nine miles in the Black Mountains in Wales and was absolutely dead! But I am determined to succeed." Link: www.horseandhound.co.uk |

Audrey Mayson and Maggi Denaro, from Byford, and Harry Aldrich-Blake, from Ross-on-Wye, will cycle more than 300 miles from May 26 to June 1 for the Help for Heroes charity that supports injured servicemen and women. The Big Battlefield Bikeride covers a demanding route tracing some of the Normandy landing beaches, and Thiepval on the Somme. The trio, who have raised more than £16,000 in sponsorship so far, will ride with about 300 people cycling from 50 to 75 miles in a day, stopping off at memorials to the lost British servicemen of the First and Second world wars. The Help the Heroes charity, formed only last October, has had overwhelming support, receiving heartfelt messages from people and donations raising £4.5 million for those injured in the war zone areas of Afghanistan and Iraq. Royal Naval Association Bexhill Branch OUR monthly branch meeting, held on the occasion of the Queen's birthday, was attended by 42 shipmates, the best 'turn out' of the year. Is this the effect of spring getting into the old bones? The evening commenced with a very interesting talk and slide show presented by Christine Hayward entitled 'The Spanish Armada'. Her slides showed many paintings of the personnel involved in this great battle, whose names have been proudly worn by ships of the Royal Navy since the time of the 'Armada'. The monthly ship identification competition featured the Battleship HMS Warspite who carried the most Battle Honours of any ship in the Royal Navy. The winner of the bottle for giving the nearest correct number of Battle Honours was S/M Denys Carden. The Royal Naval Associations main charity for 2008 is the 'Help for Heroes' charity Link: www.bexhillobserver.net |

Reece gets teeth into fundraising A soldier serving in Afghanistan was savaged by a military dog and paid for the privilege! Lieutenant Richard Campbell, from Ilkley, pitted himself against Reece the German Shepherd in a stunt to raise money for soldiers wounded in military campaigns. After putting on the protective gear - a heavily-padded sumo-style bite suit' and helmet - he contributed to the Help For Heroes charity before attempting to beat the snarling beast in a race. But the odds were against Lieutenant Campbell, 24, and he was hauled to the floor within seconds. Following the event, the former Ilkley Grammar School pupil said: "You just feel this awesome, powerful animal on your arm; once he has got a hold he is taking you down." |

£24m for Headley Court Headley Court, the armed forced rehabilitation centre near Leatherhead, is set to receive £24m in Government cash. Defence Secretary Des Browne is expected to confirm the funding today when he visits the site, which cares for injured servicemen and women. The money will be used to create a bigger accommodation block, a prosthetic limb workshop and a neurological lab. It will also go towards building an on-site swimming pool and sports complex. The announcements comes after campaign groups, including Help For Heroes, demanded better care for military men and women, who say a surge in injuries have strained resources. Help For Heroes founder and ex-Army officer, Bryn Parry, said: "I'm delighted the Government has been able to find these funds for Headley Court to ensure its future as a world-class facility. They will pay for the long identified, essential improvements. "The last seven months have seen the awakening of a national desire to support our servicemen and women, those heroes who risk their lives on our behalf." |

£24m cash boost for injured troops' rehab centre - but will it treat the rising toll? The MoD is expected to confirm the details of the £24m investment in a parliamentary statement, but the defence secretary will personally unveil the plans during a visit to the centre today. He is expected to meet clinic staff and injured personnel, including Lance Sergeant Adam Ball, 23, who lost a leg while on patrol in Afghanistan. Campaigners say privately that it is "no coincidence" that the MoD has chosen to announce the investment 24 hours before tomorrow's parade, City Salute, which will include marching Royal Marines, an RAF fly past and the projection of specially commissioned films. Funds raised will go towards building an on-site swimming pool and sports complex, proposals that the MoD is facilitating. "We've covered the essential services that we have to provide to make Headley world class," the source said. "The facilities that it would be nice to have - like a swimming pool - we're happy for charities to contribute to." Bryn Parry, chairman of the Help for Heroes campaign, said campaigners were pleased about the announcement, and would press ahead with their fundraising. "It's wonderful that this is finally happening - it's been a long time waiting. But whatever the MoD is putting in is for the necessities. It won't change the fact that at the moment we have badly injured personnel being put in a bus and driven 10 miles to use one lane of a public swimming pool. Our campaign hopes to change that." Cadets set for trip of a lifetime "The fact the cadets will also be helping to build a school when they are out there, means they will be giving something back to the local people, as well as doing the trek." The cadets have to raise a total of £1,600 each for the expedition and are appealing for sponsorship from local businesses or individuals, as well as organising local fundraising events, such as bag packing at supermarkets. In July the team will be attempting to climb the height of Everest on a mobile climbing wall at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, as part of their fundraising efforts. Any extra funds raised through sponsorship will be donated to the Help For Heroes charity, formed last year to help those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts.
