Heroes Haven provides injured Armed Forces personnel and their families with the chance of some respite in a fully adapted log cabin in Swanage.
Help for Heroes provided a grant of £10,000, which assisted with the building of the cabin and for groundwork preparation of the site.
Through partnerships with other charities and support for life at the Help for Heroes Recovery Centres, Help for Heroes (H4H) offers a holistic approach to support. This includes housing, medical and fitness support but also encompasses a focus on wellbeing through the Band of Brothers and Band of Sisters fellowship networks and through grants to charities such as Heroes Haven.
Heroes Haven is a fully adapted log cabin in Swanage that is available for use by Armed Forces personnel and their families. The 41ft by 20ft timber lodge has extra wide doors for wheelchair access, lowered kitchen worktops and a specially adapted wet room.
H4H provided a £10,000 grant to assist with the development of the build which opened in April 2012. Since then, there have been many visitors who have benefitted from this amazing place, including an ex-RAF Serviceman from Wales. He had this to say of his experience:
'I have recently spent a very enjoyable stay at the Heroes Haven log cabin purposely designed to aid injured service personnel, and I would to thank all concerned in the project. This not only extends to the trustees and charities involved, but to the people and companies of Swanage and Purbeck who made all this possible by their contributions to this exceedingly worthwhile endeavour.
'Having been seriously injured a number of years ago whilst serving with the RAF; I know only too well the frustrations of trying to locate suitable holiday accommodation that will cater for people totally confined to wheelchairs. Rest assured this cabin addresses that problem. After years of setbacks, my wife and I have become somewhat pernickety, and racked our brains to find ‘observations’ that could be improved upon. Suffice to say we have no hesitations in booking again for next year. Holidays such as this are rare, and you all should feel sufficiently proud of yourselves for your efforts and contributions. I sincerely thank and applaud you all.'
