Craig's Story

Former Green Howard Craig Donaghue from Pallister Park in Middlesbrough became more uncomfortable when a disk fusion operation has failed to rid him of constant pain, stemming from his back and down his legs, and he is currently awaiting an appointment for spinal cord stimulation.

“I am in a lot of pain but cycling makes me feel better in myself,” said the ex-pupil of Corpus Christi and St Anthony’s Schools.

“If it hadn’t been for Help for Heroes, I wouldn’t be doing anything but staying in the house as I can’t work while my pain is unmanageable and unpredictable. Since getting the hand bike though, I have been out on it every other day.

Spending time at Phoenix House and spending time with the lads makes you feel supported and less isolated. It’s that camaraderie that I really enjoyed during the Hero Ride – that and the reaction from the public when they saw what injured soldiers can achieve.”

Help for Heroes has helped Criag by giving him a handbike so that he could enjoy trips to the local park with his partner and their children. Little did he know at the time that, within months, he would be cycling from Edinburgh to London with others from Phoenix House Recovery Centre at Catterick.
