Help for Heroes works in partnership with the British Paralympic Association (BPA) in supporting military athletes into sports pathways based on a shared belief in the power of recovery through sport.
The Paralympic Inspiration Programme (PiP) forms part of the existing BPA and Help for Heroes partnership which aims to support military athletes by providing them with an opportunity to develop with knowledge that will prepare them for a future Games experience as a selected athlete, as well as inspire and excite potential future Paralympians in their ambitions.
In 2016 Help for Heroes supported seven military athletes to enable them to be part of the Programme attending the Rio Summer Paralympic Games.
The Programme was formed of 21 athletes across 13 Paralympic sports and was first launched in London 2012, providing athletes and coaching staff with an experience of several days at a Paralympic Games.
Help for Heroes were thrilled to have the opportunity for a cohort of wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans, who were participating in disability sport, to be part of the Paralympic Inspiration Programme – the third time that wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women have been included in the BPA’s Programme.
The military cohort were joined by civilian athletes who were supported by the Cadbury’s Foundation.
Thank you to The Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights for contributing towards the military athletes on the Programme.
In 2014 Help for Heroes took eight athletes to the Sochi Winter Paralympic Games as part of a Paralympic Inspiration Programme.
The athletes undertook a tough routine, with lessons about nutrition, media, anti-doping, competition planning and goal setting. Additionally, the athletes were required to keep up with their regular training programmes.
By providing learning opportunities and experience from the Paralympic Games in Sochi 2014, Help for Heroes and the British Paralympic Association hope the programme engaged military athletes, and showed them what can be achieved through sport.
Regular donations provide a sustained focus on rebuilding the lives of our wounded Servicemen and women.
