I can’t believe we are nearing the end of the summer already, although I am pleased and rather surprised to say we have had some lovely sunny days up here in the North!
One of my highlights of August was the BoB/BoS Summer BBQ at Phoenix House. Thank you to all of you who came along, it was lovely to see so many of you there enjoying the outdoor activities, I hope we kept the children occupied for at least a little while! The Exotic Pet Party certainly kept them entertained, with a visit from Nigel the owl, bearded dragons, a hairy tarantula, and a tortoise. All the face painting looked amazing, and the Phoenix House team did a great job with the BBQ. It had been a while since I’d seen some of you, so great to catch up, and for those who I met for the first time, I hope you enjoyed your time at the Recovery Centre, and it was lovely meeting you.
A brilliant challenge this month saw a team of Band of Brothers take part in the ‘Lakeland 50’ as part of their recovery. The majority of those competing have Hidden Wounds and have benefited hugely from training and completing the challenge, by enhancing their self-confidence, enjoying competitive spirit and sense of camaraderie with others who have experienced serious injury, disability, and/or mental health issues.
Sean Donlan, one of the participants said, “Before injury – when I was fit - I would never have dreamed of being capable of doing these endurance events, so to be competing in them now, after all I have been through, it’s unbelievable. Training for each challenge gives me a sense of purpose and the camaraderie among the team is like being back in the Army which I loved.”
Team True Spirit have also been busy over the last few months training for the Cotswolds Classic Triathlon which took place on Sunday 21st August. The atmosphere was incredible as everyone cheered each other on; the team did extremely well, and gained massive personal achievements! Well Done Team True Spirit!
