Shirley's Monthly Overview

Well, June has been a quiet month for me because I have unfortunately been away from the office due to illness. Meanwhile, there has still been a lot of exciting activity in Plymouth and at the Plymouth Recovery Centre and I’m raring to go again with all our BoB and BoS regional get-togethers, plus an exciting BoB and BoS water activity weekend to come at the end of July. Fingers crossed for some lovely weather to make it extra special.

On Thursday 23 June two BoBs attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Travelling up on Wednesday night they enjoyed a stay at Hayling Island before departing early Thursday morning for Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit.

They were met by Louise Preece from Mission Motor Sport who hosted the veterans. Everyone was extremely excited to be there and had a fantastic day visiting the stalls and viewing the amazing variety of cars.

On Friday 24 June a new member to the team in Plymouth, Olivia Wilson (Recovery Centre Coordinator), helped to run a walking football activity alongside Active Devon for some of our beneficiaries at Veterans’ Friday.

All those who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the sun shone down on the pitch for the whole game.

There was also a great game of sitting volleyball in the gym, which was a success and each activity will be run regularly due to such enthusiastic interest and participation.

It was Armed Forces Weekend on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June so H4H volunteers and the Plymouth Recovery Centre team were out in force setting up stands, selling merchandise and spreading the word. As always attendance was fantastic! The weather was kind to us too.

We have had a bumper crop of vegetables and fruit from the Hero Garden in Plymouth, which some of our beneficiaries have helped to nurture and grow. Once picked they are on display for all to see. Donations are welcome in return for the fresh produce on Veterans’ Friday. What more could you want for the Sunday roast than beautiful fresh, locally grown, organic H4H produce?

Now that I am back I am raring to go and will be organising more get-togethers in the South West over the coming weeks, so do keep an eye on your emails for upcoming events and activities. I would love to catch up with you all.
