There have been lots of exciting things happening for our members across the North region and at Phoenix House this June. Please have a little read about one of our favourite offers in June – Sea Fishing off North Shields!
Four of our lovely Band of Brothers members enjoyed a fantastic day out, fishing in the North Sea at the beginning of the month, with the wonderful Sam Harris MBE. Sam was very keen to invite a group of BoB members along to share his love and great knowledge of fishing. Sam has spent a lifetime in angling and angling politics, and has caught huge fish from all over the world, including a 140lb blue shark in Southern Ireland and a 75lb Sailfish in Kenya. Alongside his fishing, Sam enjoyed serving in the RAF for many years, and that’s why he wanted to offer the BoB members a day to enjoy something he is extremely passionate about.
The guys went on a rare and beautiful sunny day, out into the North Sea on a catamaran; each Brother was accompanied by a qualified sailor and angler to help them get the best experience, whether it was their first time fishing or they had previous experience. Everyone soon got the hang of things, and caught plenty of fish including cod, ling and mackerel. The crew also taught the guys how to skin the fish in preparation for cooking, ready to take home that evening.
One of our members who attended, Jonathon Reeder (in the picture), said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my day at sea. I caught lots of fish and had a laugh with the other BoB members as well as catching a great sun tan. Thank you for again the opportunity”. Another of the participants said that being on the sea was great for meditation, extremely calming and relaxing.
Organiser Sam Harris also told us: “Myself and the team thoroughly enjoyed the day; it was a real pleasure to spend time with the veterans. It was arranged for the blokes to have an enjoyable day out and learn a bit about angling but also to encourage other boat skippers to offer a day’s angling to other wounded, injured and sick veterans across the country”.

As well as this wonderful offer, we had BoB and BoS members elsewhere in the North training for the Megavalanche mountain bike race, which will take place in the Alps next month; attending regional Game Fairs as part of the Shooting for Heroes programme; singing along to Rihanna in concert in Manchester; and attending a get-together in Gateshead.
The Phoenix House Team are also busy training to do the next Tough Mudder event in Skipton this August. The first training session went well despite the wonderful Yorkshire wet weather but, there’s still a long way to go!
