The Great British Hero Ride - Joining Instructions

Places to join the ride are filling fast so please join ASAP.

Please note that GBHR wristbands must be worn on the day to gain access to Whitehall Place and the closed cycle route thereafter.

Whitehall Place

Arrival
You should arrive with your bike between 13.00 and 13.45 at Whitehall Place on Sunday 1st June, you will not be able to enter Whitehall Place prior to 13.00. Please enter Whitehall Place from the bottom corner off Northumberland Avenue, you will see stewards patrolling. There will be NO vehicular access to Whitehall Place. You should find street parking in the area on Sunday Please park in an allocated, designated parking space.

Closest tube stations: Charing Cross, Embankment.

Please note: All cyclists MUST wear a cycle helmet at all times during the ride.

Refreshments
Please ensure you have adequate water supplies, either in water bottles attached to your bike or in a camelback style container. It may be very hot! You may also wish to bring a snack in your pocket!

Please note that if you arrive before 13.00 there are several areas nearby where you can purchase refreshments- we are only a 3 minute walk from Charing Cross Station and The Strand where there are numerous cafes and shops.

Facilities
As well as in local cafes, there are public toilet facilities located nearby, as marked on the map by the symbol WC, both at Embankment and by the Horse Guards Memorial in St James’ Park, accessed through Horse Guards Arch.

Procedure
Once all riders are accumulated, there will be a safety briefing and introduction at 13.45. At 14.00 we will leave Whitehall Place and cycle onto Whitehall down to the Cenotaph, behind the wounded soldiers on their bikes. In front of the Cenotaph the group will stop, dismount and there will be a wreath laying ceremony. You will be instructed to re mount and cycle past the Cenotaph onto Parliament Square, then towards Horse Guards Road. We cycle up here and onto Horse Guards Parade for the finale speech and close.

For those who wish to support you on foot, the pedestrian pavements are open lining our route, although the best place to wait and see you arrive is at Horse Guards Parade. At approximately 14.45 there will be an address by the Halfords, the main sponsors of the ride. The Chief of General Staff will also address all riders. There will also be photo opportunities and time to chat to fellow cyclists.

Departure
It is your responsibility to decide when and how you leave Horse Guards Parade, and if you are being collected by car please make sure the vehicle is parked in an official space in a nearby street or car park. No vehicles will be allowed onto Horse Guards Parade and the cycle route will be closed off to general traffic for the duration of the ride.
