Saharan Morocco

Continuing on from the swimming of the English Channel by “Double Dip” in 2011 – In April 2012, “Triple Dune” consisting of three soldiers under the team name of ‘Smash 146’ will be competing in the Marathon des Sables (MdS) which is quoted by the organisers as being “The toughest footrace on earth”.

The aim is to raise money for Help for Heroes, which is a charity very close to our hearts. All donations made will go straight to the charity.

The MdS takes place in the Sahara desert in Morocco and is a multi stage ultra endurance race that includes six stages over six days. One of the stages includes an ultra marathon of 50+ miles followed by a standard 26.2 marathon the day after. These two stages are sandwiched by various other distances, but in total they add up to more than 150 miles.
All this takes part over harsh terrain including sand dunes, salt pans and uneven rocky, stony ground. In addition the runners will have to cope with sand storms and temperatures of 120°F.

Everything needed by the runners apart from tents but including food, sleeping kit, personal medical supplies and a daily supply of water of 9.5 litres will be carried by the runners on their backs. The MdS race is the ultimate challenge!
