WAR REQUIEM - Saturday 8th Octoboer 2011

Guildford OrganGuildford Cathedral, Stag Hill, Guildford, GU2 7UP
Saturday 8 October 2011, 7.30pm

A performance of Benjamin Britten’s great oratorio; ‘War Requiem’. This was commissioned by the Coventry Festival of 1962 to celebrate the consecration of the new cathedral built to replace the one destroyed during World War II.

The work includes poems written by the World War I poet Wilfred Owen when he was fighting in the trenches. Three women conductors will direct over 200 performers including large chorus, boy choristers, professional orchestra and soloists to give this concert which coincides with Guildford Cathedral’s 50th anniversary year.

A retiring collection will be donated to Help for Heroes.

‘Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ is especially relevant to the current conflicts worldwide and we are honoured to be able to help the charity by bringing this powerful work to Guildford and hope to fill every one of the 700-plus seats.'SarahJanice
