National Heroes Day - 21st October 2011
National Heroes Day Banner

The idea behind Heroes Day is for schools to allow their pupils to honour their heroes (whoever that is – mother, father, Buzz Lightyear, George Best, Winston Churchill, Christopher Columbus, Yuri Gagarin, their class teacher), by coming to school dressed as their hero one day in lieu of school uniform.  With funds going to H4H.

A few schools piloted the concept in this summer and the children and staff had a really great day honouring their personal heroes, some of the best costumes being a simple t-shirt with a picture of a relative serving in Afghanistan on it and children dressed as their great grandfathers along with their WW1 medals. Schools really got a buzz out of discussing with the children the difference between Heroes and Celebrities.  As a result, hardly a football shirt was in sight during the pilot events.

The Right Honourable David Cameron MP (Prime Minister), supports Heroes Day, saying, “It is heartening to hear how much you and the local community have already achieved since the sad loss of Richard, and are looking ahead to a National Heroes Day. This is an excellent initiative and I note that the idea has already taken root and been a great success locally.  I fully endorse any project that encourages community participation and increases knowledge and support for our Service Personnel.”
