The Help for Heroes New Forest Bike Ride 2011

Here at H4H, we are constantly reminded of the strength and determination of our wounded Heroes; they demonstrate true courage, spirit and humour in the face of extreme hardship. They are truly inspiring and we think they deserve the best, which is why we are so excited to introduce our New Forest Bike Ride for 2011. We hope that our wounded Heroes will inspire you to take on your own challenge by getting involved, to do something for yourself and also raise money to give something back to these incredible young men and women.

Designated a National Park in 2005, the New Forest has long been a beautiful landscape of rolling heath land dotted with heather and gorse. Ancient woodland of oak, beech and silver birch contrasts with pockets of evergreen enclosures, and our challenging day's cycle takes in the varied landscapes of this historic and beautiful region. We pass through many picturesque villages, with typical thatched cottages and village greens, as well as a short section along the south coast. A shorter route gives those who do not feel able to complete the full challenge the opportunity to take part and fundraise.

At the start of our ride we will head out through beautiful typical New Forest scenery, over rolling open heath land and through large enclosures dense with fir trees. We cycle up the scenic Ornamental Drive, one of the most beautiful areas in the New Forest, which is well worth the climb!

Heading west, our route takes us through quiet villages strung out along the floodplains of the River Avon. The northernmost part of the New Forest is the highest, and the halfway point is marked with our steepest climb yet, taking us onto the heath land around Fritham. Heading south now, the terrain becomes flatter as we pass through the area's capital town of Lyndhurst.

The final section sees more rolling hills, as we pass through Beaulieu, famous for its Abbey and Motor Museum, and the old shipyard of Buckler's Hard. We then cycle to the south coast, where we will enjoy great views of the Isle of Wight and, if it’s clear, Hurst Castle jutting out into the Solent. We then loop back inland, a gradual uphill ride as we cross the beautiful Beaulieu Heath. A lovely stretch of rolling heath land and woodland brings us back to Brockenhurst, with some welcome downhill relief to our finish point.

Those who do not feel able to complete the longer route can do a shorter circuit, peeling off after the Ornamental Drive and taking a gradual climb to one of the highest areas of the Forest, before turning into Lyndhurst and returning via Beaulieu to Brockenhurst.
