Help for Heroes Events

Saturday 13th March 2010 saw H4H's annual Colossal Cake Sale take place in a variety of towns across the UK including Winchester, Colchester and Salisbury and there is still more to come! The Cake Sale has grown amazingly since the first one in 2008 which increased to 7 last year and this year we have had over 35 sales registered!

The Salisbury Cake Sale was organised by Charlie Gale who did a brilliant job of organising raffle prizes, cake makes and stall helpers. They set up in a rather chilly place next to the Guildhall in Salisbury’s Market Square at 8am where there were already people keen to start buying the delicious wares. There was also a raffle with 1st prize being an exclusive, one on one cake decorating lesson with a respected local cake maker. The cakes disappeared very quickly and everyone was hugely generous. A total of £1,282.91 was raised on the cakes with £788.96 worth of H4H merchandise bought.

The Winchester Cake Sale was run by Anne Ponsonby, Belinda Mitchell, Judy Horne, Carolyn Balfour, Tricia Hobbs and Pat Sommerville with a team of loyal helpers! The piece de resistance was a cake made especially to auction by cake guru Jane Asher which raised £275! In total, Winchester’s lovely cake makers and sellers raised a fabulous £6000. £6000 was also the grand total collected at Newbury’s Colossal Cake Sale.

Winchester Cake Sale 2010H4H Colchester County Coordinator Marianne West organised their sale which raised an incredible £14,000. They set up at 7am on Saturday morning and the Colchester Sea Cadets and Air Cadets were on hand to help. Marianne estimates that they had over 1500 cakes along with jams, chutneys, biscuits and meringues to name just a few items! There were specialist cakes for a tombola and silent auction.

Some wonderful Gurkha ladies helped behind the stall in their traditional costumes and in the afternoon their children gave a display of traditional Nepalese dances. A team of soldiers went out with their collecting buckets which were pretty heavy by the end of the day. They ended at about 4.30 with little left but money is still being collected. They sold over £4000 worth of H4H merchandise too.

H4H would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who baked, iced, carried, donated, collected, packaged, helped on the stalls, put up tents, collected and counted the money! It has been a wonderful success that wouldn’t have been possible without you, our brilliant, dedicated supporters. To those with Cake Sales still to come – good luck and have fun!

A date for your diaries – the next Colossal Cake Sale will be held on 2nd April 2011.
