HMS Bulwark, the Royal Navy's Fleet Amphibious Flagship is home to 350 sailors and 80 Royal Marines. The 20,000 tonne warship has enjoyed an exceptionally close relationship with the charity becoming, in the words of Bryn Parry, the Co-founder of the charity, “Help for Heroes’ favourite ship”.
Bulwark’s association with H4H started in 2008 when the ship supported H4H’s Big Battlefield Bike Ride. The ship was able to put its amphibious skills to good use when it collected 276 tired but good spirited riders from Dunkirk and dropped them off, feet dry, on to the beaches of Dover. Since then the link with the charity has grown with most charitable events held onboard resulting in contributions to H4H.
Most notably the ship completed an epic cycle ride of its own from Plymouth to North Shields. The Royal Marines raced to beat the ship as she took to the seas and them to the roads. Whilst the ship pipped the ‘Booties’ to the post, over £20,000 was raised across the country.
Plenty of other events have taken place onboard and, during the ship's TAURUS 09 deployment, a number of challenging and fun events are planned. The first event was a circumnavigation of Malta by sailors and marines, and many more have been planned since then.
But it is not all about funds. Bulwark aims to spread the word on the work of the charity and raise awareness around the world.
"All of us in HMS Bulwark are delighted to have been accorded the tremendous honour of patronage status for this wonderful charity. The fact that Help for Heroes is aimed at helping all sailors, soldiers and airmen injured whilst in the service of their country is hugely humbling for us. We couldn’t be more pleased." Captain Wayne Keble OBE RN, the Commanding Officer, HMS Bulwark.
"It is a real honour for us to be become a Service Friend of Help For Heroes; anything we can do to help our wounded friends and colleagues is great news." AB(CIS) Beth Roberts Communications Specialist HMS Bulwark.
"After we saw, at first hand, Servicemen from Headley Court learning to deal with terrible injuries and the use of prosthetic limbs it inspired all of us onboard. This led to much fundraising and awareness-raising in Bulwark. To be recognised for our efforts is a fantastic honour." Lieutenant Colonel Mike Bestwick, Officer Commanding, 4 Assault Squadron Royal Marines, HMS Bulwark
“None of us who were ‘evacuated’ from Dunkirk after our 350 mile ride will ever forget the experience of being taken off Dunkirk 68 years to the day that the Miracle of Dunkirk was at its height. The welcome, generosity and superb underplayed professionalism shown by the crew of HMS Bulwark was in the very best traditions of the service. All of us at H4H greatly appreciate the efforts made by all on Bulwark and very much look forward to renewing our friendship.” Bryn Parry, CEO and Co-founder of Help for Heroes
